SLN busts over 417 kilos of cannabis in Jaffna
July 29, 2021Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) during a special raid nabbed 417 kilos and 200 grams of Kerala cannabis worth of Rs. 125 million along with three suspects and a dinghy at the sea area extending from Madagal to Point Pedro, Jaffna recently.
The operation was carried out by the Fast Attack Craft P 483 of the 04th Fast Attack Craft Flotilla (4 FAF) together with Inshore Patrol Craft P 177 and P 178 attached to the Northern Naval Command in northern waters, the SLN said.
As the search was ongoing, one dinghy escaped from the scene, dropping a few sacks into the water. A subsequent search in the Madagal sea area by boat patrols of Sri Lanka Naval Ship (SLNS) ‘Agbo’ recovered 08 polythene sacks cast away from the suspicious dinghy, the SLN also said.
The SLN sources further said the street value of the seized stock of cannabis is believed to be over Rs. 125 million.
Suspects were identified as residents of Thondamanaru and Guru Nagar, from 20 to 40 years of age.
They were handed over to the Ilawalei Police along with the cannabis and the dinghy for onward legal action.
The operation which conforms to the guidelines issued by the Defence Ministry was carried out adhering to the healthcare procedures, the news also confirmed.
