Military nabs over 325 kilos of Cannabis
August 30, 2021Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and Sri Lanka Police nabbed about 183 kilos and 715 grams Kerala cannabis haul during a special raid carried out at the Murungan, Panniwettuwan roadblock in Mannar recently.
Two suspects and a lorry were also taken into the custody during the joint operation.
Troops of SLNS Pussadewa in North Central Naval Command and Murungan Police after searching a suspicious lorry detected the stock of cannabis which had been concealed among pharmaceuticals and other products being transported, the SLN sources said.
The apprehended suspects aged 28 and 34 were identified as residents of Kandy and Trincomalee and the street value of the seized stock of cannabis is believed to be over Rs. 55 million, the SLN confirmed.
Murungan Police is conducting further investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Army's 6 Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) troops under the Security Force HQ- Mullaitivu following a tip off by Military Intelligence Corps nabbed 142.2 kilos of Cannabis during a search at Pattikarei, Puthumathalan in Chalai recently.
Troops handed over the stock of cannabis to the Mullaitivu Police Special Task Force for onward investigations.
The operations conducted in line with the directions of the Defence Ministry were in place while adhering to the COVID-19 preventive measures.
