SLN nabs over Rs. 2321 million worth heroin
August 31, 2021Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) nabbed 290 kilos and 200 grams of heroin from a multi-day fishing trawler along with five suspects during a special raid conducted in the high seas, and reportedly the vessel with heroin and suspects were carried ashore today morning (Aug 31).
Following a tip off, a coordinated intelligence operation led by SLN and other intelligence services, detected and searched the suspicious multi-day fishing trawler heading landward, yesterday, the SLN said.
According to the SLN sources, this multi-day fishing trawler sailed on July 30 and it is suspected that the haul of narcotics was fetched to the trawler through smugglers operating overseas at the international waters.
The street value of the seized heroin is believed to be over Rs.2321 million, the SLN added.
The suspects aged 31 to 37 were identified as residents of Ahungalla, Balapitiya and Habaraduwa,.
The SLN and the Police Narcotic Bureau are conducting further investigations into the incident.
The operation was conducted following healthcare guidelines, the SLN also confirmed.
