SLN brings another Heroin loaded vessel ashore
September 18, 2021The Sri Lankan Navy (SLN) seized foreign vessel carrying another narcotics haul of 170 kilos and 866 grams, was brought to Colombo Harbour this morning (Sep 18).
Sri Lanka Navy Ship Sindurala deployed for the task under the directives of the Defence Ministry, nabbed the narcotic loaded vessel with nine foreign suspects after pursuing them about 800 nautical miles (approx. 1481 km) away from the country’s southern tip.
According to SLN sources, the street value of the illegal drugs is over Rs. 1575 million.
SLN suspects that the detained vessel was intended to smuggle narcotics into the island while stationing at the international waters under the guise of a fishing vessel.
Information derived over the probes being conducted into previous drug seizures and tip off by Police Intelligence led to the successful sea operation, the SLN said.
Further investigations will be conducted into the incident and the entire operation was conducted in keeping with the healthcare guidelines, the SLN also added.
The Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne (Retd) who is instrumental in combating the drug smuggling ring, was the driving force behind to cripple the drug menace.
