Army assists in renovation work of Buddhist temples
September 29, 2021Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops have extended their engineering expertise and labour towards the renovation of several Buddhist temples in the Trincomalee, Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts which had remained in a state of neglect for some time.
Work on these projects has been taken up by troops of SFHQ-East, in response to requests made, as a part of the Army’s civil-military co-operation initiatives, states Army media.
Accordingly, troops under 22 Division in Trincomalee are involved in the renovation work on the ancient Kottiyarama Rajamaha Viharaya in Pachchanur, Lunugala Rajamaha Viharaya and Lankarama Rajamaha Viharaya in Gomarankadawala, Samudragiri Pichchamale Rajamaha Viharaya in Kuchchaweli and the historic Girihanduseya in Thiriyaya.
Meanwhile, troops under 23 Division are attending to renovation work at temples in the Pollonnaruwa district including the Kalukele Sri Sugatharama Viharaya in Dimbulagala, Sri Shailabimbarama Viharaya in Bakamuna, Sri Aggrabodhi Viharaya in Gallella, Sri Shanthi Nikethanaramaya in Somawathiya, Unagala Wehera Rajamaha Viharaya in Giritale, Sri Mahindarama Viharaya in Mailankarachchi and Siri Perakum Maha Pirivena in Pulathisigama.
The SLA media sources further state that renovation work on several temples in the Ampara district are being carried out with the assistance of troops under 24 Division.
Accordingly troops are attending to renovation work of Ampara Aranthalawa Viharaya, Sri Owagiri Rajamaha Viharaya in Polwaththa, Uththara Jayamaha Viharaya in Hingurana, historic Deegawapiya Rajamaha Viharaya in Ampara, Kotawehera Deegalaka Viharaya in Lahugala and Sri Vidyananda Pirivena in Ampara.
