Navy warship ‘Jayasagara’ completes service in the Navy
October 01, 2021The decommissioning ceremony of Navy ship SLNS ‘Jayasagara’ was held at the Naval Dockyard in Trincomalee on Thursday (Sep 30).
According to Navy media reports the ship which had rendered yeoman service for nearly 4 decades as a maritime surveillance vessel was built at the Colombo Dockyard Ltd and commissioned as SLNS ‘Jayasagara’ (P601) on 09th December 1983.
This vessel was once the Flag Ship of the Navy’s fleet until the late ’90s had made a significant contribution to the Humanitarian Operations.
Her sister ship SLNS ‘Sagarawardena’ (P 602) was also engaged in surveillance mission operations before succumbing to a terrorist suicide attack in September 1994.
'Jayasagara' played an important role during Operation Rana Derana, launched in 1990 to liberate the displaced civilians in Mannar Island from the clutches of terrorists. The ship has also taken part at various naval exercises including the International Fleet Review – 1990 in Malaysia and Naval Exercise - MILAN 1999 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India.
Navy media further states that the ship is to be handed over to the Sri Lanka Coast Guard.
The decommissioning ceremony was held with the participation of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne and senior naval officers.
