Esala Perahera continues amidst special security arrangements

The annual Esala Perahera which commenced on Monday (05 August) will enter its third day, today (07). Tight security measures are in place with sufficient numbers of Tri Forces, Police, Special Task Force and Civil Defence Department personnel being deployed for security operations.

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence SHS Kottegoda (Rtd) WWV RWP RSP VSV usp ndu, had several rounds of preparatory meetings with the chiefs of Tri Forces, Police, STF and CSD to review security arrangements. He also visited Kandy, last Sunday (04) to personally look into the security arrangements.

Combined security operations are being coordinated through an Operations Room especially established for this purpose. Special traffic arrangements are in place to assist the visiting devotees and also those travelling to other parts of the country through the city. Round the clock road blocks, random security checks and security patrols are also being carried out to ensure maximum security and safety of the people and the city.

The Kandy Esala Perahera which commenced on Monday with the Kumbal Perahera will end with the final Day Procession on the 15th (August). With a history that dates back to the times of yore, the Esala Perahera is one of the grandest annual religious pageants to be held in the country.
