Russian Army delegation arrives to observe de-mining programme

A four member Russian military delegation led by Lieutenant General Yuri Mikhailovich Stavitsky, Chief of Engineering Troops of the Armed Forces in the Russian Federation arrived in the island on a four day visit yesterday (23).

Chief Filed Engineer of Sri Lanka Army (SLA), Maj. Gen. Nihal Amarasekara and Commander Plant Engineer Brigade Brig. Anurudda Senarathna received the visiting high officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

According to the Sri Lanka Army, the visiting delegation is expected to witness the Sri Lanka Army’s humanitarian de-mining roles and share advanced technical expertise for the acceleration of de-mining work under the bilateral military cooperation programme.

The delegation is scheduled to visit Army de-miners at work. About 12.88 sq km of land in the North and East remains to be cleared of mines and Army de-miners are supposed to clear 1.24 sq km of mine laden land, the SLA says.

The Russian delegation is also scheduled to meet the Chief of Defence Staff and Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva at the Army Headquarters, it further says.

Russian Embassy officials were also associated with the itinerary of the delegation, the SLA added.
