Secretary visits East

Praises Tri Forces and Police for their dedicated service post 21st April

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence General SHS Kottegoda (Rtd) WWV RWP RSP VSV usp ndu arrived in the East making an inspection visit with a view to look into the security forces deployment and the prevailing situation in the Eastern region on, today (10 Saturday August 2019). This is his first official visit to the region since assuming office as Secretary Defence.

Secretary was accompanied by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake during his visit.

The Secretary, upon arriving at the Security Forces Headquarters – East in Welikanda was received by Commander Security Forces – East Major General Aruna Jayasekera.

The Secretary was also presented with a Drive Past by the Army troops.

Subsequently, Secretary Defence was briefed on the troop deployment and operations in the Eastern region and also of other public welfare activities during a special conference held with the participation of senior Tri Forces, police and STF officers.

The Secretary made a visit to the blast affected Zion church in Batticaloa and also to the University at Punani during his visit to the East.

Addressing the Tri Forces, police and STF officers, the Secretary Defence expressed his appreciation for their dedicated service, coordinated effort and rapid response in dealing with the challenging post 21st April situation and safeguarding the country and its people. With the experience of defeating LTTE terrorism in the past you were able to react quickly and effectively to successfully face this new threat. One should remember that you did this with upholding the Good Will of the Armed Forces and without creating any public commotions or unrest, he noted.

He also reminded that the 1983 riots gave an impetus to the terrorists and its repercussions are still being felt. He said that they should take care not to incite the people but to win their hearts and minds.

He also said the senior personnel, those who fought in the terrorist war should educate and guide the new generation in order to face emerging threats.

Senior Tri Forces, police and STF officers were also present at the occasion.
