Annual “Esala Perahera” concludes successfully

The annual “Esala Perahera”, the grand historical pageant that is held to pay homage to the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha drew to a successful conclusion. The great cultural spectacle which commenced earlier this month (05 August) was held for the past ten days at the historic Kandy city. The final Randoli Perahera was held last night (14). Special security preparations were in place for the Perahera this year with the combined operations by Tri Forces, Police and Civil Defence Department personnel before and throughout the Perahera period. Secretary to the Ministry of Defence General SHS Kottegoda (Rtd) WWV RWP RSP VSV usp ndu, had several rounds of special meetings prior to the Perahera to ensure maximum security to the visiting devotees, tourists, performers and also the residents of the city. He also made it a point to personally visit Kandy to inspect security arrangements in place prior to the commencement of the Perahera (04). |
The diligent and commitment displayed by the Tri Forces, Police and CSD personnel in ensuring total security to the people and the locations was much evident during the Perahera period. The Perahera drew a large crowd this year, both local and foreign who had arrived at the hill capital placing their complete faith on the security measures in place for the Perahera.
