SLAF carries 6 tons of seized cannabis by air
January 07, 2022An MI-17 helicopter belonging to Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) was utilized to airlift 6 tons of seized Cannabis to Sahasraveli Special Task Force (STF) camp on January 05 and 06.
The cannabis haul was seized from the Kumana forest reserve in Ampara following a two day special air reconnaissance.
The Regiment Special Forces of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) and the Special Task Force (STF) conducted the operation jointly utilizing an MA 60 aircraft following the directives of the Defence Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne and the SLAF Commander Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana.
The SLAF sources said about 5788 kilograms of cannabis were seized and airlifted on six occasions to the destination.
The carrying of seized cannabis by air was recorded for the first time in air operation history, the SLAF also said.
