Navy rescues fisherman after 18 hours adrift at sea
January 10, 2022Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) rescued a fisherman fallen into sea from a multiday fishing trawler yesterday (Jan 09).
Responding to a request made by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the rescue mission was deployed along with the assistance of Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo, the SLN said.
Accordingly, a fast passenger craft sailed out for the mission rescued the stranded fisherman at sea and brought ashore and forwarded to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital after administering first aid care at sea.
Reportedly the ill-fated fisherman had remained in water for over 18 hours waiting to be rescued.
He was among a group of six fishermen that had ventured out to sea on a multi-day fishing trawler from the Galle Fishery Harbour on Friday (07). He had fallen into sea and had gone missing on the following day about eight nautical miles off Tangalle.
The incident was conveyed to the nearby fishing vessels and ships for early identification at the time it was reported, the SLN added.
