SL contingent with women soldiers to leave for UN duties in Lebanon shortly
January 31, 2022Lebanon-bound Sri Lanka’s Force Protection Unit (SLFPU) contingent saluted the Chief of Defence Staff and Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva during the Passing out Parade at the Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regimental Headquarters at Panagoda yesterday (Jan 30).
The 13th Force Protection Company bound for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) comprised 10 officers and 115 Other Ranks together with women soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps (SLAWC), Army sources said.
This is the first UNIFIL bound group that includes two Lady Officers and seven Other Ranks of the SLAWC, taking up security duties in Lebanon's SLFPU, the Army stated.
During the parade, the Army Chief formally handed over the National flag, Army flag, United Nations flag and the Sri Lanka Light Infantry flag to the contingent adding symbolic importance to the UN assignment, the Army also stated.
Senior Officers including Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Vikum Liyanage, Deputy Chief of Staff and Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force Commandant and a representative gathering of invitees joined the occasion.
