SLAF No 5 Fighter Squadron turns 31
February 02, 2022The No 5 Fighter Squadron of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) celebrated its 31st anniversary on Tuesday (Feb 1).
Established in 1990 this is the first ever dedicated jet squadron of the SLAF. The 5 Fighter Squadron “Black Drongos” was formed at SLAF Base Katunayake with two FT-5 trainers.
According to SLAF, more air assets were later added including the FT-7, four F-7 Airguard day fighters and Mig-27s.
In September 2007, F-7GS fighter jets were introduced to the fleet in order to counter the emerging LTTE air threats, the SLAF says.
This Squadron has performed a multitude of Counter Air and Counter Surface Force Operations conducting an excess of 600 flying sorties during the humanitarian operations.
In recognition of its services to the nation the No 5 Fighter Squadron, was awarded with the Presidential Colours in 2021.
