Japanese Coast Guard and JICA to evaluate SLCG’s oil spill response skills
February 14, 2022A delegation comprised of Japanese Coast Guard (JCG) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) visited the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) Rear Headquarters in Wellawatte yesterday (Feb 13) in order to discuss initial planning for oil spill exercises scheduled to be held from Feb 14 to 25 this year.
This would be conducted according to an agreement as the ‘Phase III’ project of the providing of advisory service for improving oil spill response capabilities for SLCG, the SLCG sources said.
Fruitful discussions were held with the visiting delegation by Captain Chandana Priyantha, Director Training and other senior officers of the SLCG.
Further, it is scheduled to undertake various activities to evaluate oil spill response capabilities of SLCG in coming days, they also said.
JCG and JICA has conducted the advisory service for improving oil spill response capabilities for SLCG through the ‘phase I’ project from 2015- 2017 (Basic coastal oil spill response training up to tier 1) and the ‘phase II’ project from 2019 – 2021 (Oil spill response skills at sea by boat) during earlier engagements with SLCG.
Daiki Maeno (JCG), Hiryuki Fukushima (JICA), Ichiharu Tanaka (JCG), Yoshimi Karasawa (JCG) and Simada Kazuki (JICA Sri Lanka Office) were included in the delegation led by Senior Advisor of JICA Koji Tsuchiya.
