SLCG broadened their skills on oil spill response techniques
February 18, 2022The Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) has conducted an offshore oil spill response exercise off Colombo harbour with the participation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Mobile Cooperation Team of Japanese Coast Guard (MCT-JCG), yesterday (17).
Exercise was mainly focused on evaluating the knowledge and practical applications of oil spill response skill of the SLCG inculcated by the MCT-JCG during the phase II (2019- 2021).
The phase II was intended for developing SLCG’s co-competencies in response to offshore oil spill response by mobile platforms.
During this training evaluation exercise, Sri Lanka Coast Guard personnel on board SLCG ships Samudraraksha and Samaraksha aptly demonstrated their professionalism, capacity and confidence in responding to potential offshore oil spills.
This vital training received from Japanese Coast Guard is indeed an excellent opportunity for SLCG to showcase an effective response to oil spill incidents at sea, harbour and coastal areas.
In addition, all participants and the crew on board oil spill response ships were benefited from the facilities provided by the Government of Japan and knowledge extended by the Mobile Cooperation Team of the Japanese Coast Guard on the effective implementation of oil spill response techniques that swiftly address potential oil spill accidents within Sri Lankan waters.
