National economic security is also important – Defence Secretary
February 25, 2022The concept of ensuring ‘National Security’ isn’t merely the prevention of conventional warfare threats; it also exemplifies the prevention of unconventional warfare threats with the involvement of all stakeholders, said Defence Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne yesterday (Feb 24).
In the same vein, it is important to formulate a suitable environment to establish policies that are viable for entrepreneurs to emerge with their novel productions through National Economic Security, he also said while addressing a gathering at the Eagles' Lakeside Banquet and Convention Hall, Attidiya yesterday.
Gen. Gunaratne expressed these remarks during an event organized to launch a book titled ‘ව්යවසායකත්වයට නව ප්රවේශයක්’ (A New Approach to Entrepreneurship) authored by Dr. Thesara Jayawardene, Head of the Industrial Management Department of Moratuwa University.
Defence Secretary Gen. Gunaratne graced the Book Launching Ceremony as the Chief Guest at the Eagles' Lakeside Banquet and Convention Hall, Attidiya.
Referring to the painful memories of three-decade-long terrorism that ended in 2009 and the significance of having a secured country for the national economic prosperity, the Defence Secretary stated “Country was not in a position to attract investors and to grasp the benefits of entrepreneurial prospects effectively during the past, due to the insecurity experienced then”.
“Compared to such a backdrop, we were able to bring lasting peace formulating an environment for everyone to live freely without fear”, he recalled adding “as a result, the revival of economic prosperity came to light while blooming a number of development projects including industries related to tourism, ports and airports and also the developments targeting the conflict-ridden North and East and its folks”.
Further speaking, he went on saying that it is a great responsibility shouldered by the security agencies of the country, to curb malpractices within the administrative mechanism, riot control that lead to discourage investors and to thwart underworld actions while supporting the Police to build a peaceful atmosphere for new entrepreneurs for the creation of a viable economic environment that buds ‘National Economic Security’.
The Defence Secretary also highlighted the significance of the author’s newest publication for the retired members of the armed forces who engaged in business ventures as it provides professional guidance that is supportive to develop business avenues and to create new entrepreneurial opportunities.
Ministers, University academics, legal officers, key personalities of the financial sector, media and trade, veteran artists and a large gathering of distinguished invitees were also present at the occasion.
