More turtle hatchlings released to sea by SL Coast Guard
March 25, 2022More than 600 turtle hatchlings were released to sea on two separate occasions during last week by the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG).
According to SL Coast Guard media, the latest batch of 246 turtle hatchlings bred under the Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP) at SLCG Rohana in Mirissa was released to their natural habitat during the late hours on the 23rd (March).
Another batch of 360 turtle hatchlings also took to the sea after Coast Guard men released them the previous evening (Mar 22), it says.
Many foreign tourists patronizing the popular Mirissa beach were fortunate to witness the rare spectacle of neonatal sea turtles entering the sea for the first time.
So far the SL Coast Guard has released 3380 turtle hatchlings to sea under its turtle conservation project it says.
