New U.S. Ambassador meets State Minister of Defence and Defence Secretary
April 20, 2022Newly appointed Ambassador of the United States of America to Sri Lanka, Julie J. Chung paid a courtesy call on the State Minister of Defence Hon. Prof. GL Peiris and Defence Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne at the Defence Headquarters Complex in Sri Jayewardenepura, Kotte today (April 20).
The State Minister of Defence and the Defence Secretary warmly received the new U.S. Ambassador on her arrival.
A cordial discussion was held during the meeting to further enhance and strengthen existing bilateral ties between the two countries. Current security situation of the country was also briefed to the U.S. envoy during the discussion.
Gen. Gunaratne and U.S. envoy exchanged mementos and gifts to mark the occasion of her first visit during the session.
Ambassador Chung arrived in Colombo as the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka in the month of February this year and presented her credentials to H.E. the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on February 25.
She is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counsellor, and has served in senior positions throughout the Indo-Pacific and Western Hemisphere.
Military Liaison Officer of the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry Maj. Gen. Dinesh Nanayakkara, Chief Political/Economic Officer of the U.S. Embassy Susan Walke and Defence Attaché Lieutenant Commander Travis Cox were also present at the occasion.
