ANZAC Day, 107th War Hero Remembrance held at ‘Australia House’ in Sri Lanka
April 26, 2022The commemoration of the 107th Anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) Day took place at the ‘Australia House’ yesterday (April 25).
A ‘Dawn Service,’ was held while remembering invaluable dedication and selfless sacrifices of gallant War Heroes of the Allied Forces led by the ANZAC composed of members of the Ceylon Planters’ Rifle Corps, Army sources stated.
High Commissioners, Ambassadors, diplomats, distinguished invitees and Defence Attaches of Sri Lanka-based embassies joined the occasion while Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Commander of the Army Gen. Shavendra Silva participated in the occasion on behalf of the Tri Services of Sri Lanka, Army said.
At the invitation of HE David Holly, High Commissioner for Australia and HE Michael Appleton, High Commissioner for New Zealand, distinguished invitees laid a floral wreath at the flag mast.
ANZAC Day is commemorated every year on 25th April since the year 1916 after many Australian soldiers of the Allied Forces (ANZAC) laid their lives during the war with Turkey before Allied Forces were evacuated from Gallipoli in Turkey towards the end of the year 1915, having left a memorable and powerful legacy, the Army sources further said.
A group of the then Ceylon Planters' Rifle Corps, a Volunteer Regiment from Kandy sailed to Egypt in 1914 during World War I and in April 1915, another contingent of the Ceylon Planters' Rifle Corps had reportedly joined the 1st ANZAC in Turkey, the Army added.
