Elephant fence to protect Kanugahawewa Model Village
May 12, 2022Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) vested a recently constructed 14 kilometre-long elephant fence on the Kanugahawewa Model Village residents on May 10.
It was also handed over to the line state agency, the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWLC) during the same occasion.
The SLAF Station Morawewa undertook this community service project following the directives of Air Force Commander Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana, the SLAF sources said.
According to the details, this elephant fence will provide a strong shield for over 314 families, their property and paddy fields against encroaching wild elephants.
This initiative will put a stop to the continuous causing of damages to the harvests of the local peasant community while reducing the human-elephant conflict.
It took only four months for the troops of the SLAF Station Morawewa to accomplish the project, the SLAF added.
