Heavy showers above 150 mm to South Western part - Met Dept
May 14, 2022The prevailing showery condition in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts is expected to continue further.
The Met Department stated that heavy showers above 150 mm can occur at some places in Sabaragamuwa province and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts while heavy showers above 100 mm can occur at some places in Western province and in Galle and Matara districts.
Strong winds of 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the western slope of the central hills, Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces and in Hambantota district.
Therefore, the general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, the National Buildings Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide early warnings to Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Kegalle, Matara and Ratnapura districts considering the heavy rainfall being experienced during the last 24 hours.
NBRO sources stated that level 1 warnings have been issued to Kalutara district (Bulathsinhala and Ingiriya divisions) Kandy district (Ganga Ihala Korale and Pasbage Korale divisions), Kegalle district (Yatiyanthota, Aranayaka and Bulathkohupitiya divisions), Matara district (Pitabeddara and Kotapola divisions) and Ratnapura district (Kalawana, Kuruwita, Nivithigala, Elapatha, Ayagama, Eheliyagoda, Ratnapura and Kiriella).
NBRO has issued level 2 warnings to Nuwara Eliya district (Ambagamuwa and Kotmale divisions) and Ratnapura district (Imbulpe).
Accordingly, the people living in the hilly areas of above DS divisions have been advised to be vigilant on unusual activities in the ground areas with the receiving of higher rainfall, the NBRO confirmed.
