New Army Commander Lt. Gen. Vikum Liyanage assumes duties
June 01, 2022Lieutenant General H.L.V.M Liyanage assumed duties as the 24th Army Commander a short while ago (June 1) during a formal ceremony held at the Army Headquarters.
Lt. Gen. Liyanage was warmly received and accorded Guard Turnout and Guard of Honour was presented by the Gajaba Regiment troops in accordance with the military traditions.
Afterwards, Lt. Gen. Vikum Liyanage signed a formal document to signify the acceptance of new office amidst chanting of Seth Pirith by the Ven. Maha Sangha at the Commander’s office, the Army Media said.
He received blessings from all the religious dignitaries present at the event during the session.
Lt. Gen. Liyanage is a proud product of Matale Vijaya College.
During his 35 years long illustrious military career, he has held a number of significant command, staff and instructional appointments and was the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army prior to take over the command of the Army, the Army confirmed.
Deputy Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Jagath Kodithuwakku, Principal Staff Officers and senior Officers were present to greet the Army Commander.
