Facing the looming food security threat in Sri Lanka

  •    Seeing through the INSS ‘Threat Lens’.

Food security is becoming an apex threat to Sri Lanka’s national security. At present, the public is unable to attend the daily food necessities due to lack of products and insufficient income. Therefore, it is imperative to ensure the food security through executing timely measures, the Institute of National Security Studies (INSS) said following a ‘Threat Lens’ programme themed ‘Facing the Looming Food Security Threat in Sri Lanka’ which was conducted yesterday (Jun 16), via virtual platform.

INSS, the premier ‘Think Tank’ on national security which is functioning under the purview of the Ministry of Defence also stated in its release, the government as well as the general public is duty bound and has a role to play while stressing on the importance of the virtual discussion.

The gravity of food insecurity in the country and the ways and measures that can be broached to prevent and mitigate was highlighted by the first speaker of the event Prof. Nalika Ranathunga, Departiment of Agricultural Biology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna, during the fruitful discussion.

Afterwards, Director (Agriculture Development) of the Ministry of Agriculture GGV Shyamali elaborated the role of the government and the community, the INSS said.

According to the INSS, a fruitful question and answering session was also held with the participants creating a productive discourse on food security of the county.
 
The event was chaired by the National Defence College Commandant Maj. Gen. Amal Karunasekara and moderated by Rear Admiral Dimuthu Gunawardena who is currently performing as Acting Director General of the INSS.

Dulakshi Ariyarathne of INSS delivered the vote of thanks following the concluding remarks by the event chair.
 
Ministry officials, representatives from universities, think tanks, academics and Tri Forces, Police and Civil Security Department personnel joined the event.
