Army inaugurates Stage 1 of Maize Cultivation Project in Niraviya Farm
June 28, 2022Sri Lanka Army (SLA) commenced the first stage of Maize Cultivation Project covering 100 acres of land at the Niraviya Army Farm in Thambuttegama yesterday (June 27) in line with the government's food security programme.
Representing the Army Commander, Chief of Staff Major General Jagath Kodituwakku graced the occasion and planted several maize saplings at the location together with a gathering of Army personnel, the Army sources stated.
Hundreds of Army personnel, belonging to Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture & Livestock (SLACAL) would take care of this cultivation, supplemented by water sources of adjacent Kalaoya valley, the SLA added.
The Army sets to cover 500 acres of maize cultivation in total during the gigantic national and timely important project that moves in consultation with the government's agricultural experts, agrarian officers and experts in the Army's Directorate of Agriculture & Livestock (Dte of A & L).
Several Senior officers including Director, Dte of A & L Brig. Arosha Rajapaksha took part in the day's ceremony.
