Army clears landslide easing movement of citizens in Thawalamthenna

Troops of the 5 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment of the 581 Brigade under the 58 Division under command to 1 Corps yesterday (1) rose to the occasion and rendered assistance to people affected by severe weather.

Sri Lanka Army rescued over 120 distressed civilians following a landslide that took place at the Ranwanthenna in Makandura, Thawalamthenna area close to Kotmale New Town.

The Army said landslides have blocked the main road as soil mounds have fallen on to the road blocking passage for civilians using the road.

Army facilitated safe passage for the stranded people of both side of the road and while easing vehicular movement and clearing the blockade.

Meanwhile the Met department said showery and windy condition is expected to continue in the Western and Southern seas and over the Southwestern quarter of the island with the strengthening of Southwest monsoon.

Mentioning the likely increase of swell waves (about 3.0 - 3.5 m) in seas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota the Met Department also warned fishermen not to venture into fishing and involve naval activities in the seas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota until further notice.
