SLN foils illegal migration attempt
August 02, 2022A special operation carried out by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and Wennappuwa Police nabbed 47 persons suspected to involve in an illegal migration attempt to an overseas country via sea from Wennappuwa, recently (31).
The suspects were nabbed following the search of three suspicious vehicles in Wennappuwa. The SLN said 37 males, six females and four teenagers were taken into the custody along with the vehicles involved in this illegal racket.
The raid was conducted following information received by the Sri Lanka Navy, the SLN added and further said suspects identified as residents of Jaffna, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Kalmunai, Batticaloa, Puttalam, Chilaw, Marawila, Mahawewa, Mundalama and Wellawatta were handed over to the Wennappuwa Police for onward legal proceedings.
The SLN also says that racketeers organize this kind such illegal migration scams in order to make money and therefore urges the general public to refrain from risking their lives by engaging in perilous sea voyages and be brought before the law.
