Fishermen rescued by Navy from sinking trawler

August 19, 2022

Several local fishermen on a fishing trawler were brought to safety by the Navy after their trawler was in danger of sinking in the southern seas.

According to Sri Lanka Navy media, six (06) fishermen onboard the multiday fishing trawler ‘Dileesha Putha II’ were rescued from the sinking trawler and brought ashore to the fisheries harbour in Tangalle this morning (19 Aug).

The trawler had left from the Kudawella fisheries harbour for fishing earlier this week (16) and had collided with a ship at sea.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) at the Navy Headquarters upon being alerted by Sri Lanka Coast Guard, had sent a distress signal to the ships in the sea area to be on the lookout for a distressed fishing trawler.

A Fast Attack Craft of the SL Navy’s southern command sent for the rescue mission had located the wrecked trawler about 18.5 nautical miles (34 km) off Dondra in southern seas and brought the six fishermen safely to shore. They were later sent to the Tangalle Base Hospital.
