Navy relief teams on standby
September 01, 2022With the onset of heavy rains in most parts of the country weather advisories have been issued by authorities for sudden flooding and landslide warnings.
Sri Lanka Navy says it has kept 35 relief teams ready as of last evening (31 Aug) to respond to emergency situations. These relief teams are kept on standby upon the directives of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne.
Accordingly 26 relief teams of the Western Naval Command are on standby to be ready for deployment in Kalutara, Rathnapura and Colombo districts while 09 teams of the Southern Naval Command have been kept ready for deployment in Galle, Matara and Hambantota districts.
These relief teams will be deployed in coordination with the Disaster Management Center, it says.
Meanwhile the Met. Department has predicted showers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western and Northern provinces and in Anuradhapura, Galle, and Matara districts and fairly heavy showers above 75 mm at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western and Northern provinces.
