Army supports building a house for a teenage cricketer family in Jaffna
September 19, 2022Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops of the Security Force HQ-Jaffna recently offered manpower, technical and engineering skills for the construction of a new house to the family of Christiga Selvarasa of Chulipuram Victoria College in Jaffna who has been selected to the under-19 female cricket team of Sri Lanka.
16 Gemunu Watch troops of the 513 Brigade of the 51 Division have undertaken the project which is underway in collaboration with Nallur-based Thiyahie Charitable Trust (TCT) Chairman, Mr Vamadevan Thiyagendran as an appreciative gesture of her achievements as a school-aged female cricketer, the SLA sources stated.
The Army also arranged a sponsor to help her proceed with sustained cricket training with a monthly allocation of Rs 5000/= by way of a scholarship, given by an overseas-based donor because of her economic hardships, the SLA stated.
The foundation-laying ceremony to build the home was held in Chullipurama, amidst Hindu religious blessings and traditions.
Meanwhile, a total of 125 dry ration packets were distributed among most deserving civilians in Puthukudyirippu, Mullaittivu, the Army Media reported.
Ven Gawaragiriye Premarathana Thero, Chief Patron for Colombo Royal College's Buddhist Brotherhood Association coordinated the donation with the sponsorship provided by Ven Dr. Bellanwila Dhammarathana Nayake Thera, Adviser, Buddhist Library of Singapore, Chief Incumbent at Bellanwila Raja Maha Vihara and the incumbent, ‘Paaramitha ’ Meditation in Kadugannawa, the SLA confirmed.
