September 23, 2022

Sri Lanka  Army (SLA) peacekeepers deployed in Mali were highly praised for their performance with high degree of professionalism and a special service medal was awarded to Maj. R.A.D.M.D Senevirathna of 4th Combat Convoy Company (CCC) under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission (MINUSMA) during an appreciative meeting held recently.

During a recent logistics convoy from Gao to Kidal in Mali, the Sri Lanka Search and Detection team uncovered two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and effectively defused both of them before they caused a bloodbath, the SLA Media reported.

Maj. Senevirathna of 12 Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) discovered both landmines, buried near the roadside.

The Force Commander, MINUSMA Lt. Gen. Cornelis Johannes Matthijssen who paid a visit to the CCC Camp highly commended the acts of the CCC, their professional management of the defusion, alertness, attention and diligence, the SLA stated.

Tribal terrorist groups in Mali have recently intensified their fierce internecine violent acts targeting their rivals as well as UN troops serving the landlocked country, posing a formidable threat to all UN troops, deployed for UN peacekeeping assignments, the SLA Media confirmed.
