Army organizes Volleyball tournament for 7 Jaffna teams

1 Mechanized Infantry Regiment troops of the 552 Brigade on a conceptual guidance given by the General Officer Commanding, 55 Division, Major General Prasanna Gunaratne, organized an Inter-Grama Niladari Division Volleyball Tournament (15-16 October) with players of seven Grama Niladhari Divisions, in attempt to further foster civil-military relations in the Jaffna peninsula.

The Commander, 552 Brigade, Brigadier Wijayanath Jayaweera accordingly had the tournament conducted at the Volleyball Court in the 1 Mechanized Infantry Regiment camp at Iyakkachchi during both days. Civil sector volleyball teams from 7 GN Divisions competed in the tournament and displayed their skills and performances.

Kovilvayal GN Division team and Iyakkachchi GN Division team were selected as contenders for the finals. However, players in the Kovilvayal GN Division team after a close neck-to-neck competition emerged as Champions in the Inter-GN Division Volleyball Tournament and carried away the Championship. The Iyakkachchi GN Division team clinched the runners-up slot in the tournament.

Commanding Officer, 1 Mechanized Infantry Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Rohana Thilakaratne graced the finals as the Chief Guest. Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks and civilians also took part in the awarding ceremony.
