October 31, 2022

Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) dropped one hundred thousand (100,000) seed bombs in the Wattegama, Kebilitta Government Forest Reserve in the Siyamblanduwa Divisional Secretariat area recently (29 Oct).

According to SLAF media, seed bombs were dropped covering 80 acres of the forest reserve.

This is the seventh phase of the SLAF’s seed bombing project which is carried out under the guidance of Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana together with the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Peradeniya and Central Environment Authority, it says.

These seed bombs carry seeds of native tree species such as Kon (Schleichera oleosa), Kohomba (Azadirachta indica), Maila (Bauhinia racemose), Ma Dan (Syzygium cumini), Siyambala (Tamarindus indica), Mee (Madhuca longifolia), Palu (Manilkara hexandra), Kumbuk (Terminalia arjuna), Kayaa (Swietenia macrophylla), Bulu (Terminalia belerica), Kithul (Caryota urens), Munamal (Mimusops elengi), Karanda (Millettia pinnata) and Ketakala (Bridilia retusa), it says.

Seed bombs were dropped from an Air Force Bell 212 helicopter in the selected location. It is expected that with the onset of the monsoons seeds have a better chance of survival and add to the increasing green cover of the country.
