Weather forecasts predict rainy weather

The wet weather condition experienced in many parts of the country is likely to continue according to forecasts of the Met Department. The latest weather advisory issued by the Department, today (12) predicts of a high possibility for afternoon thundershowers particularly in the Eastern, Uva, Central and North-central provinces and in Vavuniya and Mullaitivu districts.  

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts and heavy rainfalls about 100-150 mm are likely at some places in these areas.

Winds will be Westerly to South-westerly with a speed between 30-40 kmph in the sea areas around the island.

The sea area from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Puttalam to Kankasanturai via Mannar can be rough at times as winds can pick up speed up to 50-55 kmph at times.
Temporarily strong gusty winds up to 70-80 kmph and very rough seas can also be expected during thundershowers.

The Department of Meteorology advises people to seek shelter, preferably indoors during thundershowers and never under trees. People should also avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms

Using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms should also be avoided. Travelling in open vehicles, like tractors, bikes and boats is also not advisable.
