‘Udarai Oba’ unveiled at the Nelum Pokuna

It was an unforgettable evening of an enchanting musical journey when curtains were drawn for the much awaited musical extravaganza, ‘Udarai Oba’, held at the Nelum Pokuna theatre, this evening (14 September).

Playing to a packed audience, the list of performers which included top notch singers in the local music scene, mesmerized them with some of the all times hits and popular numbers. It was one of finest musical shows to be held in Colombo in recent times attended by both old and new prominent artistes.

President Maithripala Sirisena graced the occasion as the chief guest.

Speaker, Hon. Karu Jayasuriya, was also present as a special guest.

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, General SHS Kottegoda (Retd) WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc and the Chairperson of the MoD Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Sonia Kottegoda received the President upon his arrival at the venue.

Making the welcome address, Mrs. Kottegoda briefly explained the purpose of the project and its benefits to the War Heroes and their families.

The show was organized by the Seva Vanitha Unit of the MoD as a fund raiser for the proposed Vocational Training Centre (VTC) for Tri Forces, Police and Civil Security Department personnel and their family members. The project, mooted under a concept of the SVU Chairperson Mrs. Kottegoda will provide professional training in Hospitality Management, language and Information Technology.

The show featured some of the best known veteran singers and popular showbiz personalities such as, Sunil Edirisinghe, Edward Jayakody, Charitha Priyadarshani, Keerthi Pasqual, T.M. Jayaratne, Sujatha Attanayake, Danapala Udawatte, Deepika Priyadarshini, Bathiya Jayakodi, Santhush Weeraman, Latha Walpola, Umariya Sinhawangsha, Danusha Dissanayake and Sanka Dineth. Several other artists and musical troupes from the Tri Forces, Police and Civil Security Department added colour to the show.

‘Udarai Oba’ was backed by a number corporate heavyweights including LOLC Holdings PLC, Sri Lanka Insurance, Hayley’s Advantis Ltd, Laughs Gas PLC, Ceylon Newspapers (Pvt) Ltd, WTS Group and Metropolitan Communications (Pvt) Ltd and individual philanthropists including Mr. Madura Wickramaratne, Mr. Suresh Fernando, Mr. Chandi and Mr. Rohan Athureliya. These sponsors had volunteered to provide support and put their weight behind this ambitious project which will be benefit War Heroes and their families.

Secretary to the State Ministry of Defence, Mr. NKGK Nemmawatta, senior state officials, Chief of Defence Staff, Tri Forces Commanders, former Commanders, special invitees were also present at the occasion.
