Navy cleans clogged bridges as Met Department forecasts more rain

September 30, 2019

The torrential downfalls that is being experienced during the past week due to the inclement weather condition has seen a rise in water levels in many rivers and temporary flooding in low lying areas. Receding flood waters carry a lot of debris which get stuck under bridges and culverts preventing the smooth flow flood water. This may pose a flood threat to the surrounding low lying areas.

Rushing to prevent such a potential threat, Sri Lanka Navy troops cleaned the Dodangoda and Wakwella bridges in Galle, which had been clogged with such flood debris, on Sunday (29).

The Gin Ganga (River) has carried down a large amount of flood debris with the rains resulting in many bridges downstream being clogged.

The team of naval personnel including Navy Marines and Divers managed to clear the debris allowing the flood water to flow free.

Meanwhile, the latest forecasts of the Met Department predict the possibility of evening thundershowers over most parts of the country, today (30). Heavy falls of about 100 mm are likely at some places in the North-western and Central provinces and in the Anuradhapura and Hambantota districts. Fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely at some places elsewhere.
