Navy beach cleaning drive continues to gather steam

October 01, 2019

Continuing its commitment to protect the environment especially the coastal areas, the Sri Lanka Navy is carrying out a series of beach cleaning programmes throughout its naval command areas under a directive of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva. According to Navy media, naval troops under the Northern Naval Command conducted two such beach cleaning programmes at Vettalakerni and Peduruthuduwa beaches on Monday (30 September).

These programmes were conducted with the participation of a large number of naval personnel who took pains to remove all litter and garbage including plastic waste materials that had collected in the beach, posing a threat to the ecology and an eyesore to the pristine beauty of our coastal areas.

Such cleanup programmes were also held in Aliyawalei, Sillalei to Saukkad, Perunkadu, Kankesanthurei and Mandativu beaches by the Northern naval troops during the week.

Joining in the campaign, naval troops under the Northwestern Naval Command cleaned the Mullikulam to Pukkulam and Alankuda to Norochcholei beach areas on Friday (29).

Meanwhile, naval troops in Trincomalee carried out another beach cleaning drive under the SLN Dockyard’s “Green and Blue Domain Project”. The beach areas of the Sober island were cleaned of garbage and other waste materials and were safely removed by the naval personnel during the programme.
