Coast Guard cleans coastal areas

October 04, 2019

Playing its part in protecting the coastal eco system and marine environment, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard carried out a coastal cleanup campaign, recently. The programme, conducted in view of the International Coastal Cleanup Day was held last week at several locations in its regional directorates.

According to Coast Guard media, coastal areas in the vicinity of all Coast Guard bases in the Western, Southern, Northern and Eastern Regional directorates were cleaned during the programme upon the direction of the Director General of Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Rear Admiral Samantha Wimalathunge.

The country’s coastal and marine eco systems have come under threat largely due human intervention. Rapid urbanization of coastal areas and the resulting irregular and haphazard removal of household and industrial waste, garbage and other solid and liquid materials to the sea has led to coastal areas being subjected to pollution.

The Sri Lanka Coast Guard, as a stake holder in protecting the coastal environment has taken steps to minimize pollution and educate the coastal communities by conducting community awareness programmes and assisting other stakeholders.
