President attends the Enthronement ceremony of Japanese Emperor

The Enthronement ceremony of His Majesty the Emperor Naruhito took place in the presence of several world leaders and other dignitaries today (22) at State Hall of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

President Maithripala Sirisena, HRH the Prince of Wales, King of Belgium Prince Philippe, King of Sweden Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus and  Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani were among the distinguished gathering.

Emperor Naruhito has formally proclaimed his ascension to the throne in an elaborate ceremony.

After 30 years, the former Emperor Akihito abdicated the Chrysanthemum Throne on April 30th 2019 being the first Japanese emperor to do so since 1817. On May 1st 2019, His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince Naruhito acceded to the Throne as the 126th Emperor of Japan.

Following the ceremony, the new Emperor hosted a banquet for the invitees.
