October 29, 2019

The Sri Lanka Navy has taken steps to mobilize relief teams to areas identified as vulnerable due to the prevailing weather conditions as a precautionary measure.

Accordingly, Navy relief teams have been deployed in the Thawalama and Neluwa areas in the Southern Province. Relief teams made up of Navy's Rapid Response, Rescue and Relief Unit (4RU) and the Naval Diving Unit have been assigned for these duties.

As a precautionary measure, Navy had also carried out several programmes to clear canal, bridges and culverts to regulate the smooth flow of flood waters during the rains to minimized the risk of flooding during the previous week.

One such program was launched on Monday (28) in Galle to clean the Dodangoda Bridge. A Navy diving team attached to the Southern Naval Command was deployed to remove debris and other materials that had got collected under the bridge disrupting the water flow of the river. The block had posed a threat of flooding the inhabited low lying areas in the surrounding areas. Navy personnel cleared the debris thus ensuring the uninterrupted flow of the river water.
