School children educated on Drowning Prevention
October 31, 2019A Drowning Prevention awareness programme for school children was conducted by the Sri Lanka Coastguard, recently. According to Coastguard media, the programme was conducted at the Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya in Trincomalee, on 24th October.
A group of 150 students of the school in the Eastern coastal town attended the programme which was held in parallel to the, recently launched Sri Lanka National drowning prevention programme.
The programme was conducted by qualified Coastguard lifesaving instructors.
Drowning is the second leading cause of deaths in the country. The Sri Lanka Coastguard has taken the initiative to conduct workshops and awareness programmes to educate the public, especially the coastal communities and school children of proper ways of lifesaving and preventing water related accidents.
The Coastguard has established lifesaving stations in popular beaches around the country which are manned by qualified and experienced lifeguards. So far over 1300 lives including those of foreign tourists have been saved the Coastguard lifesavers.
