Defence Secretary looks into the needs of ‘Senehasa’
January 01, 2020Defence Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne met a group of representatives from the Senehasa Education Resource Research and Information Centre (SERRIC) at the Ministry, today (01).
The Defence Secretary was briefed on the operations of the Centre by the officials during the meeting. Discussions were also had on resolving difficulties, issues, and also its future activities.
The SERRIC is a Sri Lanka Army managed institute established for children with special needs of Tri Forces, Police and Civil Security Department personnel. While special care and attention is given to children with disabilities and impairments, the Centre is open to all children and is an information hub to learn and acquire knowledge in child development.
Situated at Narahenpita in Colombo 5, the Centre caters to around 3000 children with special needs of which 1946 children are from military families. Identify, assess innate abilities, strengths and weaknesses of such children, provide clinical support, parental guidance and counselling, promote research for the development of children, provide pre-vocational training unique to the individual are some of its many objectives.
Additional Secretary Mrs. Samanthi Weerasinghe (Defence Services), Director of SERRIC, Colonel Prasanna Hettiarachchi, Dr. Danapala and Prof. Hemamali Perera were associated with the discussion.
