Firearm licence applications are now available on defence.lk

During the recently announced grace period, 200 firearms without valid permits or with no renewed permits have been handed over to Police stations in nine provinces.
This has alarmed a sensible need of educating public on proper procedure to be followed for timely renewal of firearms.
The procedure for initial registration of private security firms and renewal of firearms licences has been identified as areas of widely concerned by various interested parties.
Defence Ministry have taken steps to grant access to respective application forms in its official website (defence.lk).
Defence Ministry’s Civil Security and Development division regulates the firearms renewal system and registering of private security firms in Sri Lanka.
All persons in possession of a firearm must hold a valid licence in accordance with the Firearms Ordinance.
According to Defence Ministry's Senior Assistant Secretary of Civil Security and Development, Priyantha Sumanasekara, all firearms licences are to be expired within 12-months (by 31st December in every year) and can be renewed prior to the expiray date by submitting a duly filled renewal form.
Those who have handed over the weapons during the amnesty will also be given three-months from the day that they have handed over the weapons to the police to follow the renewal process.
With the conclusion of the week- long firearms amnesty, the Police together with other intelligence agencies have commenced raiding illegal firearms.
Stern legal actions will be initiated against those who have not renewed their licences on time.
