Major General Aruna Jayasekera (Retd), a highly decorated and respected military leader, was sworn in as the Deputy Minister of Defence on 21 November 2024.

Hailing from a distinguished family in the Uva Province, he completed his education at Uva College and Badulla Central College before joining the Sri Lanka Army in 1985. He was Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the prestigious Gemunu Watch after completing his basic training, he rose to prominence as a fearless and strategic leader, commanding the 4th Battalion of the Gemunu Watch during an era of high-intensity counter-insurgency operations.

Throughout his illustrious 34-year military career, Major General Aruna Jayasekera (Retd) played a pivotal role in shaping the operational and strategic dimensions of the Sri Lanka Army. He held numerous key appointments, including Director General Training of the Sri Lanka Army, General Officer Commanding - 68 Division, Commandant SL Army Officer Career Development Centre (Presently upgraded as the Army war college) Colonel of the Regiment of the Gemunu Watch and Commander of the Security Forces Headquarters - East. His leadership extended beyond the battlefield as he was instrumental in conceptualizing and directing the first multinational Field Training Exercise Cormorant Strike, a hallmark of Sri Lanka’s defence collaboration efforts.

An accomplished professional, he represented Sri Lanka on global platforms, including the National Defence Course in Bangladesh and forums in China, India, Brazil and Indonesia, where he shared insights on Sri Lanka's jungle warfare experiences and counter-terrorism strategies. His service was further recognized with numerous prestigious awards, such as the Weera Wickrama Vibushanaya, Rana Soora Padakkama, Vishishta Seva Vibhushanaya and Uttama Seva Padakkama for his bravery, unblemished and outstanding contributions to the nation.

Having served with distinction in international peacekeeping missions in Haiti and Mali, Major General Jayasekera (Retd) exemplified professionalism and dedication to the nation. Major General Aruna Jayasekara complemented his military career with rigorous academic pursuits earning MSc (Def & Strat Stud) University of Madras, MSc (War Studies & Def Mgt) National Defence University Islamabad and to enhance further his expertise he earned MSc (Strategy & Development Studies) Bangladesh University of Professionals. These academic achievements, combine with his operational experience solidified Major General Aruna Jayasekara reputation as a pioneer, strategist and mentor to inspire future generations through his academic engagements at esteemed military institutions such as the Kotelawala Defence University. Also he is a professional sportsman where he had contributed much to Sri Lanka Army Tennis as the Chairman of Army Tennis Association and has achieved many medals, awards, regimental colours and the Championship of Defence Service Tennis Tournament in year 2018.
