Defence Secretary visits new Army HQ
December 09, 2019Defence Ministry Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne visited the new Army Headquarters Complex Akuregoda in Pelawatta, Battaramulla, today (09 December).
The Defence Secretary was respectfully received by the Commander of the Army, Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva set with a drive-past and Guard of Honour upon his arrival.
This is the first official visit undertaken by the Secretary to the Army Headquarters since assuming office as the Secretary of Defence.
He also left some compliments in the Army HQ visitors’ book.
Mementos were also exchanged during the occasion.
Later, Secretary made an inspection visit to the Defence Services Headquarters Complex project. He inquired into the progress of the work and gave necessary instructions for expediting the completion of the project.
The ten-storied New Army Headquarters is contained in Blocks Nos. 6 and 7 of the new combined Defence Headquarters complex with Navy and Air Force wings and extents 77 acres in full. The Army HQ is enhanced with state-of-the-art security system, office rooms, two helipads, accommodation facilities, vehicle parks, restaurants, cafeterias and catering appliances, generators, water storage tanks, libraries, and all other facilities and is considered as the largest office building in Sri Lanka with office capacity for more than 4000 personnel.
Ministry of Defence, office of the Chief of Defence Staff, Navy and Air Force Headquarters are also projected to transfer in here when constructions are fully completed.
